The True Cost of Coffee Around the World in 2026

A Starbucks latte costs $2.48 in Vietnam and $13.75 in Norway. We break down why your daily coffee habit costs wildly different amounts depending on where you live.

Coffee is the world's second most-traded commodity after oil, and for millions of people, it's a non-negotiable daily ritual. But that ritual costs very different amounts depending on your zip code. We compared Starbucks Grande Latte prices across 39 countries and found a 5.5x price gap between the cheapest and most expensive markets.

The Cheapest Lattes in the World

CountryStarbucks Latte (USD)
๐Ÿ‡ป๐Ÿ‡ณ Vietnam$2.48
๐Ÿ‡ท๐Ÿ‡บ Russia$2.75
๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿ‡ฌ Nigeria$2.75
๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ด Colombia$2.75
๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡ท Argentina$3.03
๐Ÿ‡ฟ๐Ÿ‡ฆ South Africa$3.03
๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡ฑ Poland$3.03
๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡ญ Philippines$3.03

Vietnam โ€” one of the world's largest coffee producers โ€” offers the cheapest Starbucks latte at just $2.48. This is partly because Vietnam grows huge quantities of robusta coffee beans, keeping local costs low, and partly because Starbucks prices aggressively to compete with Vietnam's legendary local cafe culture.

The Most Expensive Lattes

CountryStarbucks Latte (USD)
๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿ‡ด Norway$13.75
๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ช Sweden$11.00
๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ญ Switzerland$7.70
๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ช Ireland$7.15
๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿ‡ฟ New Zealand$7.15
๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡ช UAE$5.99
๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ฌ Singapore$5.86
๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ United States$5.75

Norway takes the crown at $13.75 โ€” nearly 5.5x the Vietnam price. Scandinavian coffee prices are inflated by high wages, expensive commercial real estate, and Norway's general price level. Sweden isn't far behind at $11.00.

What Makes Coffee Expensive?

It's not the beans. Green coffee beans account for less than 10% of the cost of a cafe latte. The real cost drivers are:

Labor. A barista in Oslo earns $20โ€“25/hour. A barista in Ho Chi Minh City earns $1.50โ€“3/hour. This alone explains most of the price gap.

Rent. Starbucks locations are typically in high-traffic areas with premium rent. Prime retail space in central Oslo or Zurich can cost 10โ€“20x what it costs in Manila or Bogota.

Milk and dairy. Fresh milk is expensive in countries that import it (Singapore, UAE) and cheap in dairy-producing nations (New Zealand, Ireland โ€” though other costs push their prices up).

Taxes. VAT on prepared food and beverages ranges from 0% (some Gulf states) to 25% (Scandinavia). Norway's 25% VAT applies to every latte.

The Daily Latte Effect

Here's where it gets interesting. If you drink one latte every weekday (20 per month):

CountryMonthly Latte Cost
๐Ÿ‡ป๐Ÿ‡ณ Vietnam$50
๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ณ India$91
๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ United States$115
๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง United Kingdom$105
๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ญ Switzerland$154
๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿ‡ด Norway$275

A daily latte habit in Norway costs $275/month โ€” more than total food budgets in some developing countries. In Vietnam, the same habit is $50/month, and you'd likely be drinking at a local cafe for even less.

Local Coffee Culture vs. Starbucks

Starbucks prices are just one measure. In many countries, local coffee culture offers dramatically better value:

  • Vietnam โ€” Ca phe sua da (iced coffee with condensed milk) at a street stall: $0.50โ€“1.00
  • Italy โ€” Espresso at a neighborhood bar: $1.20โ€“1.50
  • Turkey โ€” Turkish coffee at a traditional cafe: $1.00โ€“2.00
  • India โ€” Filter coffee at a local chain: $0.80โ€“1.50
  • Colombia โ€” Tinto (black coffee) from a street vendor: $0.30โ€“0.50

When you compare local coffee culture rather than global chains, the gaps are even wider. A Colombian tinto at $0.30 versus a Norwegian flat white at $8+ represents a 25x difference.

The Remote Worker's Coffee Budget

For digital nomads and remote workers, coffee shops are basically co-working spaces. Here's where your cafe-office budget goes furthest:

  1. Vietnam โ€” All-day cafe with WiFi: $5โ€“8 in drinks
  2. Thailand โ€” Specialty coffee shops in Chiang Mai: $8โ€“12/day
  3. Colombia โ€” Medellin's cafe scene: $6โ€“10/day
  4. Portugal โ€” Lisbon coffee shops: $8โ€“12/day
  5. Indonesia โ€” Bali cafe culture: $7โ€“12/day

Compare these to $20โ€“30/day in London, $25โ€“35/day in Zurich, or $15โ€“25/day in New York.
