Healthcare is one of the most emotionally charged cost categories. When you need medication, you need it — and the price you pay depends enormously on where you live. We tracked 19 healthcare products across 40 countries, from over-the-counter painkillers to LASIK eye surgery, and found some of the widest price gaps of any category.

Over-the-Counter Medications

The simplest comparison is basic painkillers — identical chemical compounds sold under different brand names worldwide:

Paracetamol (20 tablets) ranges from roughly $0.30 in Pakistan and India to $8–12 in Switzerland and Norway. That's a 30x price gap for the same drug.

Ibuprofen (20 tablets) follows a similar pattern — under $1 in South Asia, $6–10 in Western Europe and Scandinavia.

Why the gap? In developing countries, generic medications dominate the market and are sold with minimal markup. In wealthy countries, brand premiums, pharmacy margins, and regulatory compliance costs all add up.

Prescription Medications: The Ozempic Example

Ozempic (semaglutide), the weight-loss and diabetes drug that has become one of the world's most-prescribed medications, shows dramatic global price variation:

In the US, Ozempic can cost $800–1,000/month without insurance. In many European countries, it's $200–400/month. In India, where generic versions are available, costs can drop to $50–100/month.

These differences reflect a combination of patent protection, government price negotiations (common in Europe), and the availability of generics.

Dental and Eye Care

Elective healthcare procedures show some of the most interesting global price patterns:

LASIK eye surgery (both eyes):

  • Cheapest: India, Thailand, Turkey — $500–1,000
  • Mid-range: South Korea, Spain, Poland — $2,000–3,000
  • Most expensive: US, Switzerland, Australia — $4,000–6,000

Turkey and South Korea have become major medical tourism destinations precisely because of these gaps. The quality is comparable (many surgeons trained at the same international institutions), but costs are 50–80% lower.

Dental cleaning:

  • Under $20 in India, Pakistan, Thailand
  • $50–80 in most of Europe
  • $100–250 in the US, Switzerland, Australia

Invisalign treatment:

  • $1,500–2,500 in Thailand, India, Mexico
  • $3,000–5,000 in Europe
  • $5,000–8,000 in the US

The Medical Tourism Equation

Our data supports what millions of medical tourists have already discovered: you can save 50–80% on elective procedures by traveling to countries with lower healthcare costs, while still receiving high-quality care.

Popular medical tourism destinations and their strengths:

  • Thailand — Dental work, cosmetic surgery, wellness
  • India — Cardiac procedures, orthopedics, eye surgery
  • Turkey — Hair transplants, dental work, LASIK
  • Mexico — Dental work, bariatric surgery
  • South Korea — Cosmetic surgery, dermatology, LASIK

Important caveat: Medical tourism works best for planned, elective procedures. Emergency healthcare, chronic disease management, and follow-up care are better handled in your home country or where you have insurance coverage.

Supplements and Wellness Products

Multivitamins, vitamin D supplements, and protein powders show moderate global variation — typically 2–3x between cheapest and most expensive countries. The US and UK tend to have competitive prices here due to large supplement markets and economies of scale.

What This Means for Your Budget

Healthcare costs are highly personal — a healthy 25-year-old and a family with chronic conditions have very different spending profiles. But the data clearly shows:

  1. Basic medications are dramatically cheaper in developing countries (10–30x less)
  2. Elective procedures offer the best value in Southeast Asia, India, Turkey, and Mexico
  3. Insurance and health systems matter more than raw prices for most people
