Unlike physical goods that cost more to ship across borders, digital subscriptions have no manufacturing or logistics costs. Yet Netflix charges $26.02 in Switzerland and just $2.86 in Pakistan. Why do companies charge 9x more for the same bytes of streaming video?

The answer is purchasing power pricing — and it creates some of the largest price gaps of any product we track.

Netflix Standard Plan: Global Prices

Price TierCountriesMonthly Cost (USD)
Under $7🇵🇰 Pakistan, 🇳🇬 Nigeria, 🇮🇳 India$2.86 – $5.98
$7 – $10🇪🇬 Egypt, 🇮🇩 Indonesia, 🇵🇭 Philippines, 🇻🇳 Vietnam$6.15 – $9.43
$10 – $14🇯🇵 Japan, 🇧🇷 Brazil, 🇰🇷 South Korea, 🇲🇾 Malaysia$10.15 – $12.06
$14 – $18🇦🇺 Australia, 🇨🇦 Canada, 🇸🇬 Singapore, 🇩🇪 Germany$13.63 – $17.38
$18+🇬🇧 UK, 🇺🇸 USA, 🇮🇪 Ireland, 🇨🇭 Switzerland$17.71 – $26.02

The United States — Netflix's home market — charges $19.99/month, making it one of the most expensive countries for the service. Switzerland tops the chart at $26.02.

Why Regional Pricing Exists

Tech companies price by region for a practical reason: maximizing total subscribers.

If Netflix charged $19.99 globally, it would have almost zero subscribers in Pakistan (where the average monthly income is around $150) or Nigeria or India. By pricing at $2.86–$5.98 in these markets, Netflix captures millions of subscribers who would otherwise pirate content or simply not subscribe.

This strategy works because the marginal cost of an additional Netflix subscriber is essentially zero — there's no physical product to manufacture or ship. Every new subscriber, even at $2.86/month, contributes pure margin after content licensing costs are spread across the base.

The VPN Arbitrage Question

Can you just use a VPN to get Pakistani prices? Technically, many people try — but companies are cracking down:

  • Netflix requires a payment method from the country you're signing up in
  • Spotify periodically checks your GPS location and may cancel accounts
  • YouTube Premium has started requiring local IP addresses for family plans

The risk is losing your account and watch history. For most people, the savings don't justify the hassle and Terms of Service violations.

Which Subscriptions Have the Biggest Price Gaps?

Based on our data, the largest percentage gaps between cheapest and most expensive countries:

  1. Netflix — 9.1x gap (Pakistan $2.86 vs Switzerland $26.02)
  2. YouTube Premium — ~10x gap across markets
  3. Spotify — ~10x gap
  4. ChatGPT Plus / Claude Pro — usually flat global pricing ($20/month everywhere)
  5. Microsoft 365 — ~3x gap

AI subscriptions like ChatGPT Plus and Claude Pro are notable exceptions — they tend to charge the same price worldwide, though this may change as these services mature and expand into price-sensitive markets.

The Remote Worker's Advantage

If you're earning a Western salary while living in a low-cost country, regional pricing is one of the hidden bonuses. Your Netflix, Spotify, YouTube Premium, and other subscriptions can cost 60–80% less than what you'd pay in the US or Europe — adding up to $100+ in monthly savings just on digital services.
